Registered Electrician deadline for gaining 18th Edition
15 January 2019
With the 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations now in full effect, all ECS Registered Electricians with the 17th Edition must upgrade to BS7671:2018 before 01 July 2019, in order to maintain their Registered Electrician status.
Over 15,000 ECS cardholders are now signed up to Registered Electrician status and receive a well-deserved endorsement for their professionalism and skills. The ECS introduced Registered Electrician status in 2017 to recognise those who are not only qualified to the industry-recognised Level 3 standard, but also the current Wiring Regulations.
“If you’ve not already done so, we recommend that you undertake your 18th edition training and assessment as soon as possible in order to meet the July deadline,” said David Thomas of ECS. “With various training routes available, such as classroom, online or assessment only, there are plenty of options to choose from.”
Once the BS7671:2018 qualification is gained, Registered Electricians can simply upload the certificate to their MyECS account for free and immediately access their updated ECS virtual card via the MyECS Virtual Card app.
To encourage the wider industry to work to the latest British Standard for electrical installation, since 01 January 2019 all new applications for ECS Installation Electrician gold cards must hold BS7671:2018.
Important notice for existing gold card holders:
The new rules regarding Registered Electrician and 18th Edition only apply to those:
- who have never held a gold card before
- or who are already Registered Electricians
- or whose cards are more than 12 months out of date on 01 July 2019.
If you currently hold a standard gold card, providing your card does not become more than one year out of date, you can continue to renew your card as normal without the 18th Edition or the obligation to sign up to Registered Electrician status.
You will still need to pass the ECS Health, Safety & Environmental Assessment before you can renew.
