Changes have been introduced to the ECS for apprentices applying for their first gold card after completing their apprenticeship. The options available to them will depend on when they apply and which edition of the Wiring Regulations they hold.
Until 31 Dec 2018:
Completing apprentices with the 17th Edition can apply now and will become an ECS Registered Electrician*. They have until 01 July 2019 to gain the 18th edition qualification if they wish to maintain their Registered Electrician status.
From 01 January 2019:
Apprentices with 17th edition – an Installation or Maintenance gold card will be issued. They can upgrade to Registered Electrician when they gain the 18th edition.
Apprentices with 18th edition – a Registered Electrician card will be issued and no further action is needed.
To help recently qualified apprentices move from the 17th to the 18th Edition, we encourage training providers and employers to work together to look at solutions for progressing the apprentice to the latest standard over the next 18 months or so.
* ECS Registered Electrician terms and conditions must be signed up to as part of the card application
