The Apprentice ECS card is for students undertaking any electrotechnical advanced apprenticeship.
It allows apprentices to be formally recognised and work on site to gain valuable industry experience in support of their training. The cards are issued under the strict understanding that a formal industry training programme is being undertaken and that all work the apprentice carries out is under supervision.
The apprentice should be JIB-registered by their training provider to get the full benefit from industry registration. JIB registration includes an initial ECS card, staged apprentice cards to show progression and the final Gold card at the successful completion of the apprenticeship. The JIB training requirements are listed in the JIB Handbook.
Apprentices registered with the JIB will have JIB Registered printed on their ECS card.
Potential apprentices will usually start their employment via a recognised training provider or through local contacts with an employer. Some companies may offer trial periods of work to potential apprentices to ensure that they understand the reality of working on site, the expectations of the company and allow the company to gain a better understanding of the individual and their work ethic.
The ECS Pre-apprentice card is designed to support the employer and potential apprentice in achieving a successful probationary period before the full apprentice registration is made by the training provider.
Training providers registered with the JIB are able to make apprentice registrations at any time once the formal apprenticeship agreement is in place.
Employers need to confirm any pre-apprentice cards are for those individuals with defined probationary periods.
Before the employer applies for the ECS Pre-apprentice card they must ensure that the potential apprentice has been provided with a suitable induction and has undertaken and passed the ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Awareness Assessment.
The ECS Pre-apprentice card is valid for 12 months and cannot be renewed.
